The world today faces an unprecedented crisis in the environment and health. Despite the advancements made in the field of health and the environment, the situation is on the verge of a global disaster. The problems are so extensive and important than the future welfare of humanity, along with many other forms of life on the planet is threatened.

In recent years we have been accustomed to see, hear and take certain attitudes that we see as normal or acceptable, since these attitudes and their negative effects to our health tremendously. We refer to those attitudes that harm the environment. Many, too, human actions that are attacking the environment, so many of them irreversible. The proof of this is often evident in other cases is supported by scientific studies and in some cases, this proof is difficult to make short term, but all indications are dangerous.

On the one hand, people and communities, especially the poorest and most marginalized, who are subjected to increased discrimination, face the direct consequences of local environmental destruction, which usually result from exploitative business practices and projects destructive development. Those in worse health are charged with destruction of their local environment.

Moreover, global and regional changes in the environment are beginning to affect the world population. These drastic environmental problems, for example climate change and depletion of the ozone layer, are mostly caused by unsustainable lifestyles, overconsumption and unhealthy development patterns. It is likely that these environmental problems first hit the poor and marginalized, and with more drastic consequences, but eventually also affect the privileged. Unless halt to these environmental trends around the world, could wreak havoc on entire ecosystems and systems that are essential to life as well as causing a crisis of major proportions, unprecedented for all mankind.

Environmental factors that influence health are many, including: the quantity and quality of drinking water, the possibility of access to nutrients mediated by its existence, the market price and the prestige that they have been culturally determined, a home adequate, requiring construction resources and materials take into account culturally accepted, and its connection to water and sewage networks and distribution of construction, appropriate work environments with distinct security measures, well-paying jobs that allow a suitable standard of living adequate management and disposal of solid and liquid wastes, the degree of environmental pollution and occupational general level, the availability of arable land and food quality and population fluctuations, determined by the migration phenomenon closely related to the quality of life and availability of resources.

Health as an integral part of society is not free from the cares of the Environment, therefore, the entire society is obligated to care for the environment in order to maintain health.

In the last decades of the twentieth century, concern for enhancing the content of the term health is based on including the absence of disease as a purely biological phenomenon welfare elements, so that health as a field meeting of the phenomena economic, political and social. In this sense, health can be regarded as the dependent variable of this set of activities.

With regard to these priority issues, actions in the field of environment should aim, first, the need for careful monitoring of environmental exposure to pollutants and, consequently, alterations in the health and welfare through the development relevant indicators. Therefore, assessment of health impact, risk analysis and risk reporting form the basis of any action.

Addressing environmental health in the municipality an opportunity to discuss what is happening to us. Enable the listener is willing to respect that which goes beyond what is expected to hear. It is accepting what is, albeit different from what we know or choose. It is necessary to propose to promote reflection on environmental health in their own locality, evaluate it and suggest healthy alternatives.
