Each year it changes. It is therefore essential to have an international monitoring system. The purpose of this monitoring is to detect the earliest possible influenza strain that escapes the vaccination or the appearance of a new strain. Such events are the cause of pandemics famous “Spanish flu” (1918-19), The HongKong flu (1957), the Asian flu (1968). The system allows the rapid characterization of circulating strains to make recommendations on the composition of the annual vaccine against influenza.

The new influenza virus type A (H1N1) can be transmitted to humans through consumption of pork products and pork.

The virus in question in the current outbreak of human influenza is a new strain of influenza virus H1N1. The transmission of influenza virus is usually by direct contact or close proximity with humans or animals infected. EFSA has no scientific evidence suggesting that influenza viruses can be transmitted to humans through consumption of meat such as pork products and pork.

Although pigs are exposed to this new virus and it can be found in meat, thorough cooking of pork (an internal temperature of 70 ° C) would kill the virus, as is the case for other viruses and bacteria. Regarding the handling and preparation of meat products and meat, it is not necessary to take other precautions as usual recommendations to implement a healthy diet

Consistent with its mandate, EFSA monitors particular aspects of the situation concerning animal health and food safety.

The virus in question in the current outbreak of human influenza – and also discovered in a pig farm in Canada – is a new strain of influenza virus H1N1. It contains genes from viruses of swine influenza, avian and human combined in a form that has never been observed before.
The influenza virus type A can infect humans (human flu) and a range of animals including pigs (swine flu), birds and poultry (bird flu).

As we know Influenza A is a disease caused by a new virus (called H1N1) that could affect the entire population, with increased risk of complications between 15-50 years.

Being a new virus have no defenses against it so that this epidemic has been declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) pandemic as it affects more than 100 countries worldwide simultaneously.

The Ministry of Health of The Nation has taken as a precautionary measure the advancement of the winter holidays for children attending primary and secondary schools, in order to reduce infections.

Now the big question that now arises is how do I send the kids to school?

Well, for starters we talk with our children about what prevention measures to be taken to avoid creating fear and strengthening healthy hygiene habits.

Remember that the flu virus is spread from person to person through secretions contained in “droplets” which is spread by talking, coughing or sneezing (with another person less than 1.5 meters away) or entering hands or contact with surfaces contaminated with these secretions (touching eyes, nose or mouth). It is very important that children know what the routes of infection and generate in them hygiene to avoid contagion, not only Influenza A but also of many other diseases.

What care should take children for back to school?

Wash hands often with soap and water. Always remember that washing should last 30 “and should generate approximately abundant foam. For the youngest is useful to sing a song while washing. Once dry hands with disposable towels and close the faucet with the paper. It is very important to emphasize washing especially after using the bathroom, returning from recess, before and after eating some food, etc..

When you want to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the inner angle of the elbow, and wash hands immediately. A practical and economical is to buy several packages of disposable handkerchiefs to avoid the use of handkerchiefs where the virus can be retained by encouraging the breeding ground.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with dirty hands. Explain to children should be placed a “helmet” imaginary which would avoid the entry of the virus in the mucous membranes (eye, nose and mouth).
Do not greet him with kisses and shake hands (especially teenagers).
Do not share cups, cutlery, food and beverages.

What care we take in?

In addition to personal hygiene must maintain a proper household hygiene. To accomplish this objective should be cleaned regularly with bleach the different environments at home, toys, pacifiers, etc..
The bleach is a disinfectant too noble to be used in diluted form. Always remember that like any cleaning product should be out of reach of children.

Can I strengthen my body’s defenses?

Nutrients play an essential role for our system’s defenses or immune system. Maintaining a healthy and varied diet provides the necessary tools so that our body can defend itself not only of the Influenza A virus, but other common diseases during the winter.

Some useful tips when eating:

Perform the 4 meals. Especially breakfast in children, as it not only provides essential nutrients for our immunity but also allow children to pay attention and improve their school performance.

Perform a varied diet. Avoid especially snacks of low nutritional value.

Eating fruits and vegetables. Variously eat provides us with the amount of vitamins and minerals that our body needs every day to avoid having to buy pharmaceuticals.
