Consumption of Alcohol

If before 14 years of alcohol consumption is rare [1], in contrast to 17 years, alcohol is by far the psychoactive substance most consumed during the previous 30 days. Indeed, 8 of the young age of 10 (75% girls and 82% of boys) reported at least one use during this period [2, 3]. This gap between boys and girls is increasing when the level of consumption rises. Thus, nearly three times more boys than girls (18% against 6%) reported regular use, ten drinks in the last month.

More than half of 17 year old’s (57%) reported having been drunk in their lifetime, nearly half (49%) over the last twelve months and one in ten (10%) at least ten times during this period. As the consumption of alcohol intoxication is highly masculine sex ratio reached 1.3 for drinking and lifetime, 1.4 for drunkenness during the year and 2.9 for drunkenness regular (at least ten episodes during the year).
Less than half of young people (46%) said they drank more than five drinks at least one occasion during the last thirty days, 2.2% reporting having at least 10 times. This behavior of alcohol, which is the binge drinking Anglo-Saxon Alcohol designating a point clearly above the WHO recommendations, is very male: 56% of boys against 36% of girls had at least once , 3.6% vs 0.7% at least ten times.

The classification of beverages based on the number of their customers during the month, shows that beer and premix drinks are most popular with 57% and 48% of consumers before the liquor (43%) followed by champagne and Sparkling wines, cocktails and the wine that comes in sixth place (28%). The hierarchy of preferences for boys and girls are similar, but differ particularly in the first three choices, both in terms of products classification: beer and spirits and premix for boys, premix, then champagne and beer girls. The strong presence of premix in this hierarchy invites us to consider carefully the use of these products and marketing strategies and promotion are tied to them. They have in effect first disappeared in 1997 following a specific tax and have reappeared in 2002 in favor of circumventing the rules. The hierarchy of regular users is in turn very close to that of boys, who are overrepresented in this group of drinkers.

At European level, the young French report uses alcohol relatively average compared to other countries: 7% of French students aged 16 years reported regular use, placing France at the 21st place in European countries, the Netherlands being the countries where regular use is highest (25%) and Finland where it is the lowest (3%)
